Redesigning My Website: My Process and Inspirations

So, after taking a year break, I decided that my old website layout...wasn't meeting my design expectations. It was a number of factors: I've been pivoting into the more 'kawaii' core aspect when it comes to fashion ever since late 2024 / 2025 as a way to not only start new and reinvent myself after living in the UK for a while now, but also because I wanted to indulge in such an aesthetic for a while now. Maybe because of the greater access of said fashion both by living in Asia now and having adult money (and Instagram) but finally being able to embrace this aesthetic feels so nice for me, and what better way to do so by refreshing my website?

Intial Themeing and Layout Ideation

There's a lot of food related items there...

For the initial ideation of what I wanted my website to be like, I made a moodbard via images on pinterest. I wanted that kawaii/pastel feeling, so I initially picked a lot of images with said colours. When sorting my images, I noticed that a lot of it was food related (whether it was the algorithm at play or just my love for aesthetically pleasing desserts). Another thing that might've also steered me from food-related stuff was not only my love for poofy and cottage-core dresses irl, but also a particular figurine of Frieren that I want for my collection.

The strawberry-themed packaging (located on the bottom-middle of the moodboard) caught my eye too. I am a huge sucker for aesthetically pleasing packaging, and since it fitted well with the cafe-themed direction I wanted to include it made it in the final 'cut'. I am also a huge gamer (if anyone hasn't noticed yet lol...) and I wanted to somehow convey that with my design. Ultimately, I suppose, that aspect could only be included in content lol. But I do have plans to hopefully make a theme out of it later down the line. Possibly.

Can you recognise any websites on here? I labeled some - but not all.

In addition, layout is very important to me. When I was looking for inspiration, I was looking at specifically at how I would organise both my home page and beyond. I did this by looking at some websites that I absolutely love, as well as carrd layouts and notion layouts too.

Typography was also a factor, since I thought it be a text-heavy website, reserved for the yapping I'm doing now. The fonts that I use all come from Google Fonts since it's the easiest to use for integration without getting sued for copyright - which I am weirdly cautious about despite this being a personal website... with copyrighted material LOL. I was looking for something that was clean and easy to read - though I went with a more stylised version in the end.

Colour Palette

Initial colour picking

Picking the colours for my website was harder than it should be lol. The final colours I picked for my website was done by literally colour-picking the images of my moodbard and filtering the choices until something I wanted. I then doodled some layouts on my notepad before jumping straight to coding, since Phoenix Code makes looking at what the final website would look like very easily.

I dropped the blue and red for more shades of pink and brown, since they go well with the pale white. I really like the shades though, and hopefully when I finally make themes for my website I can use them again!

Future Plans and Considerations

Though everything is what I want it to be right now, there's no doubt that there's more that I want to add in the future. I've laid the groundwork now, but there's no doubt there's more that I want to do and can do to improve my website. These include:

  • A theme changer and themeing around the blue and red from the Colour Palette section. I also want to make something mint chocolate-chip themed since I love the colour combination too (and the flavour of ice cream).
  • A navigation tab for both mobile and web.
  • Greater website accessibility for screen readers / sizing / etc.

Tools and Resources

Figma - This website I use for making moodbaords and choosing clolours. When I want to wireframe I also use this, as it makes the whole process much simpler and really useful when you just want to visualise the website better when pen and paper isn't cutting it.
