Who is Marth?

Marth is a character from the Fire Emblem Series, and is the first 'Lord' class character. He is the prince of Altea, son of King Cornelius and Queen Liza, the indirect descendant of the hero Anri, and inheritor of the divine blade Falchion. He first appeared in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, where he is driven from his home due to the invasion of the Dolhr Empire. He took refuge in Talys, where he met Princess Caeda, and two years later departed to amass an army to free Altea and to free the empire's grip of the continent of Archanea. This campaign was known as the War of Shadows.

In Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem Marth once again leads his comrades into battle to stop his former friend, Hardin, from taking over the continent once more, and was tasked by the legendary White Sage Gotoh with stopping the return of Medeus and the Earth Dragons. This campaign was known as the War of Heroes.

Because of his heroic deeds across the two wars and his demonstraited leadership, Marth developed a reputation of being a legendary hero. Many believed that he was destined to lead Archanea into salvation, due to his use of the legendary Binding Shield (also known as the Fire Emblem). In time the continent came to be united under his rule, andn he became known as the "Hero-King" of the Archanean Alliance.

His first appearance in the West was in Super Smash Bros. Melee, where he was an unlockable character, alongside Roy. He has made multiple appearances in other Fire Emblem and Nintendo games since, and is the Emblem of Beginnings in Fire Emblem: Engage.

So Why Like Marth?

Short answer: I think he's neat, and that other people should think he's neat.

Long answer: Because of Marth being the first protagonist of the first game ever, and said game being released in Japan, the first exposure the West had of him was in the Super Smash Bros. series, and for me, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was really young then and didn't know about the Fire Emblem series at all outside of very surface level knowledge, and I had never really seen advertisements of it, since I lived in a country where accessing games meant pirating games mostly. I only got into the series due to Conquest and then Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and even in that game I mainly just... didn't care about Marth really.

Then Heroes and Warriors came out. Though the latter game had given Marth some much needed exploration, I felt that my indifference towards him was mainly due to me caring more about the Fates roster in the game at that time, and that Heroes didn't do a good job portraying him as other than 'good generic chosen one #1' at the time (the exploration potential of Heroes vs what they actually do... a rant for another time). Keep in mind that I thought Fates writing was actually good at that time, and also was never really aware of his depiction of the Shadow Dragon remake.

It was only when Engage came out that I started to care for Marth. Hhe was there in the beginning and has such a sweet relationship when he was on-screen with Alear that I couldn't help but be drawn to them and him; even with Alear's memories missing I felt like they had a natural chemistry and history between one another, and during Chapter 10 where Marth gets ring-napped,cI started to joke in the place of Alear, making them say 'where Marth' until you reunite with him in Chapter 21.

I'm a weirdo who attaches to characters that have angst, and especially when it's a self-sacrificing hero who fights for what they believe in, like Marth. Looking back at his conversations in Engage as well as Warriors as well as Heroes and his home game, I can say that he's a really sweet charaacter that just wants the best for people. I love it that despite being royalty, he sees himself and his friends from all backgrounds as equals; that he tries his absolute hardest to make people happy; that he's humble, and knows that he's not that strong nor wise, but his charisma and honesty makes him an ideal, shining beacon for people to rally around for the greater good. He's endured a lot and recognises that he's not a saint, yet tries and shows mercy - killing only when absolutely necessary.

I think I also admire him for his resilience despite tragedy and trauma. He (seemingly) lost his family and his entire Kingdom overnight, and was forced to flee his home, exiling himself to Talys until two years later. Even when taking back his Kingdom from Gra forces and Dohlr, he had the chance to be vindictive to said Kingdoms, but didn't. Even in the face of overwehlming trauma and anger, Marth still chose to be kind to his enemies; it's something I wish myself to be like, and hopefully one day be a shining star in my friend's lives just like him.

TL;DR I think he's the goodest Fire Emblem boy, and I hope you now share my enthusiasm towards him too!

Headcanons

Warning: Some of these headcanons are NSFW/18+! I will mark them in the front and censor them, but please proceed with caution!

Marth's favourite fruits are strawberries, because he enjoys their perfect balance of sweet and tangy.

Growing up on an island kingdom, he also enjoys seafood, and some lightly grilled salmon with vegetables and spices is his favourite.

In the small amounts of free time Marth has from his duties, his favourite hobby is to take long, quiet walks in the woods. He also likes to listen to music and read various books, with fantasy/romance books being his favourite genre.

Marth is bisexual with a preference for women. He's very oblivious to this fact alongside being oblivious to signs of people liking him romantically.

"Marth is Tiki's adoptive dad" headcanon is so real. He raised her with his own hand alongside his children and was really sad knowing that she would outlive him and her human siblings. Still, he gave her an immense amount of love up to his deathbed. Tiki still remembers and considers him a father figure.

Manaketes in general are drawn to Marth because of his warm personality. Alear, Veyle and Tiki are especially close to him.

Marth's go-to caffine source is a latte with lightly-roasted Ethiopia equivilent beans. He also likes ceylon tea, and drinks a nice, sweet wine during dinner meals.

Marth has a robust alcohol tolerance due to him drinking at a young age. His tolerance can be described as "a surprisingly large amount", though he obviously can't hold compare to taller characters like Ike and Sigurd.

Elice was the one who gifted Marth his iconic circlet when they were both young. Marth loves it, and has kept the original one amongst his collection of other circlets he's commissioned/wore over the different games.

NSFW Marth is primarily a service top/bottom. He loves giving more than recieving, and does anything he can to make his lover happy in bed.

NSFW "What kink does Marth have in bed." Praise him. Praise him and call him a good boy and Marth gets so elated like the puppy boy he is he cums.

Shipping Roster

Caeda

The OG ship with the first FE girlboss herself.

Though it can feel like an obligation to ship them sometimes, the canon interactions with Marth and Caeda always remind me why they're such a good couple. I think about especially their support in Warriors (link); you expect them to be all lovey-dovey, but here they are in another world fighting each other about keeping the other safe. They really, really care and love each other, and there's a lot of room to explore Marth's insistence in keeping Caeda safe vs Caeda's stubbornness to keep Marth safe. I really wished official Fire Emblem media explores more of this (or maybe they do and I have yet to play the games which feature this aspect of them more prominently) but I think they're neat.

I just think it's cute how happy Caeda makes Marth as well, and in some Heroes conversations you can see how much they fawn over each other lol. Couple goals.

Alear

To the majority of FE fans who have played Engage, most agree that the story is really bland and typical, with many of the Fire Emblem cliches within the series being found here. That said, I feel like Alear's relationship with Marth is not only very sweet and touching, but one of the things I wish Engage explored further. For example, in the game you start with Marth on Alear's ring finger, and obviously the protagonist of the anniversary game would have the Emblem of the first Lord in the series with them. Clearly they have a really deep bond even if Alear has lost their memories at that point, which makes losing Marth after Chapter 10 all the more devastating for Alear.

Which makes Chapter 24 where you meet the past Alear and corrupted Emblem Marth all the more interesting. It's implied that not only Alear was desperate for any sort of kindness and affection, but that Emblems are still conscious despite being mute/controlled. It also broke my heart when Alear had to say goodbye to Marth - the last Emblem to disappear, and for Marth's ring to be the one Alear to pick up when trying to summon the Emblems back after the after credits time skip.

I also really like Marth's relationship with Fallen M!Alear in the Fire Emblem: Heroes Forging Bond conversation with him. We know that this Marth Alear is interacting with is not the Emblem, yet Marth, being so naturally kind, takes Alear in initially to save him from the Emblems but develops a friendship with Alear, to where F!M!Alear did not want to make Marth sad, despite having little intentions to disobey his father's orders.

I just think their interactions are super neat, especially when in Heroes, M!Alear always has at least one line that references Marth. Platonic or romantic, it's so clear that both Alear and Marth have been through so much and care for each other.

Ike

NGL I purely ship them because there a lot of Super Smash Bros. fanfics of them and I am a massive fujoshi goblin. I can see the appeal, and I'm kinda disappointed that there's no interaction between them in Heroes despite it being quite a well-known Super Smash Bros. pairing. Heck, the most they interact is in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary campaign.

It's ultimately a hot 'I think they're neat' pairing. I ship it because it's there and while I'm not that familiar with Ike as a character, I like what has been written between him and Marth.

Edelgard von Hresvelg

This is one of two ultra crackships I have that include Marth. This started as a sort-of joke that because the English VAs of Marth and Edelgard (Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt) are married irl, then logically, both Edelgard and Marth would be a great couple. Outside of that I feel like they would at least get along (until Edelgard declares war lol) and they're my two FE faves so :).

Ren Amamiya

Okay, this ship is pure crack and delusion that first spawned from a joke about Akechi's spirit battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I am a huge shuakeshu shipper, and in said spirit battle they use Marth (and Pit) to represent Crow and Robin Hood. I made the joke to my friend Tomo, which spiraled into them sending a shipping meme to me. I then went 'haha but what if Marth was an exchange student to Shujin from Altea' and things snowballed from there. It didn't help as well that Ren was/is still part of my hyperfixations and a 'core favourite', and it just completely spiralled from there.

Snorting copious amounts of crack aside, I really think their dynamic would be cute and interesting, AU or not. Ren who is someone who naturally rebels against social norms and authority, and for Marth he IS the social norm and authority. I love the idea of them being each other's check and balance; where Marth would keep Ren 'in line' so to speak and Ren in turn would encourage Marth to break through strict social norms (within reason) and would no doubt call out on Marth when Marth does something he disagrees with.

I also think their personal love dynamic would be so wholesome as well. Though I am a toxic yaoi enjoyer, the fact that Ren would have someone as honest to him as Marth - someone who he feels safe with and gives him unconditional love - makes my heart melt. That and for Marth, nothing excites him more than Ren, because Ren would be someone who would push Marth to do things he wouldn't normally do (knowing that Marth would most likely end up liking it) would be so, so sweet. It's so dumb this ship but I love them in how much you can play with their personalities and dynamic. I can rant about them all day oh my goddddddd.

TL;DR this ship is PURE DELUSION.

Quotes

"Over all the battles we've fought together, I have come to see my own powerlessness. As but one, I cannot accomplish anything. Together, we can face everything. That is why having you at my side gives me courage beyond the telling of it. I shall continue to fight at your side as long as you will allow me. I am eternally grateful that we may count on one another."

- Marth: Altean Groom; Fire Emblem Heroes

"Ever since people began referring to me as Hero-King, I've been pondering the true meaning of justice. Victory births the defeated, and the defeated vow vengeance through clenched teeth. This means history is forever doomed to repeat itself. My father struck down, my country seized... I, too, have seen losses, so I can empathize. After fleeing to safety, I swore to restore my homeland with the help of my comrades. It was Nyna who entrusted me with the Fire Emblem...and it strengthened my resolve to fight on. I no longer fought for vengeance... I fought for the people. I found victory only because I had first found so many allies who shared my new sense of justice. They lent me their strength, and we fought as one. And now, I have come to believe that you share that same sense of justice. Let us continue to fight as one, [Summoner]."
